I see this in this painting with the Red Tree reluctantly holding onto those leaves as they struggle to depart on the wind even though it knows that it has to be this way, that they must leave. The song is about the end of a relationship, where the girl recognizes that nothing is working for them any more and the guy finally grudgingly admits it as well, telling her to leave, to go hasten down the wind. I just always loved the imagery in that phrase– hasten down the wind– and thought it fit well with this piece. If that sounds familiar you probably remember the old Warren Zevon song from the the 70’s most famously covered by Linda Ronstadt on her album with the same title. It’s 10″ by 30″ on canvas and is titled Hasten Down the Wind. This package also includes an interview disc in which Zevon discusses his work in particular his 2000 album Life’ll Kill Ya with Jody Denberg.This is a painting that I finished over the weekend.

Zevon's vocals truly shine on this set, and demonstrate an emotional intelligence that's deeply affecting despite the rougher textures of the recordings, and a number of the unreleased songs are fine additions to his repertoire, especially 'Studebaker,' 'Stop Rainin' Lord' and 'The Rosarita Beach Café,' any of which would have been worthy additions to Zevon's early studio albums. These alternate takes often reveal a tighter and more potent emotional focus than the 'official' versions, and some include different lyrics or musical structures in their rough draft form.

Most of the tracks on Preludes feature Zevon with minimal accompaniment, often just his guitar or piano with one or two additional musicians, and even the tracks with a full band such as 'Werewolves of London,' 'Desperados Under the Eaves' and 'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' are sharper and funkier than the versions fans know best.
